A sedan drifted into oncoming traffic and struck a Republic Services trash truck Friday afternoon, shutting down the highway in both directions, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — Three people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries Friday afternoon, Sept. 18, after a car crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a garbage truck on Highway 155, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

State troopers said a brown Mercury Grand Marquis was heading north on GA-155, also known as McDonough Highway, near Old Griffin Road around 3 p.m. when the driver failed to stay in their lane. The sedan veered into the southbound lane and struck the front of a southbound Republic Services trash truck.

The driver and passenger of the Mercury were taken to Grady Hospital with serious injuries. The garbage truck driver was also seriously hurt and was rushed to Piedmont Henry Hospital, authorities said.

Both vehicles were badly damaged in the collision, which left debris and skid marks spread across the road near Jonesboro Road and the Henry Parkway Connector, east of Interstate 75.

A viewer at the scene reported seeing a Life Flight helicopter landed nearby, along with several McDonough Fire Department trucks and ambulances.

Officers closed Highway 155 in both directions while crews cleared the wreckage and investigated, bringing traffic in the surrounding area to a standstill.

Officials have not yet determined what caused the driver to leave their lane, and the names of those injured have not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
