Driver cited after hitting, injuring Decatur crossing guard
DECATUR, Ga. — Decatur Police cited a driver accused of hitting and injuring a school crossing guard on Friday afternoon, March 20.
The incident happened at 2:34 p.m. at the intersection of South Candler Street and Kirk Road.
“Upon arrival, the crossing guard was alert and conscious,” the police department said in a social media post. “The investigation revealed the vehicle was turning left onto South Candler Street from Kirk Road. The crossing guard was crossing South Candler Street traveling eastbound in the crosswalk with the pedestrian walk signal.”
The driver hit the crossing guard while turning left, police said. Police cited the driver for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The crossing guard was transported to a local hospital.
Police had no additional information about the crossing guard’s condition.
This is not the first time a crossing guard has been injured. A driver seriously injured a crossing guard in a 2023 incident. The driver in that case fled the scene but was later arrested. That incident occurred at the intersection of South Candler Street and East College Avenue.
Decatur has a robust crossing guard program, with dozens of crossing guards helping direct students as they cross busy streets on their way to school.
