A firefighter was ejected and died at the scene after a fire engine rolled over while responding to a structure fire in Conyers.
CONYERS, Ga. — A Rockdale County firefighter died Friday evening after being ejected when a fire truck overturned at the intersection of Sigman Road and Eastview Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. Friday, June 12, as a Rockdale County Fire Rescue truck responded to a structure fire call in the area. Investigators say the truck was turning left when it rolled onto its passenger side, ejecting a firefighter who had been riding in the back. That firefighter died at the scene.
Officials are withholding the firefighter’s name out of respect for the family. They have not said whether any other vehicles were involved in the crash or whether anyone else was injured.
“Today, we grieve the loss of one of our own. Our hearts are with the firefighter’s family and with every member of our Fire Rescue family who is hurting from this tragedy. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from our community as we navigate this unimaginable loss together,” said Fire Chief James Robinson.
Rockdale County officials have asked the community to keep the emergency responders and the victim’s family in their prayers. Neighbors who live near the crash site expressed deep sadness over the loss. “The ambulance was parked up there, and they were just waiting to escort, you know, all the police and motorcycles and things and wait on the escort, the body up to the hospital,” said neighbor Rodney Thomas. A frequent visitor to the station, Thomas added, “I go up there and get my blood pressure checked and stuff like that. They’re a nice group of guys, and they always helped me out. So it’s terrible. I hate it for the Rockdale family firefighters.”
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash. The firefighter’s name has not yet been released.
